Somerset's Castle Cary Railway Station Area Set for Residential Development

A new residential development could soon be coming to Castle Cary, with plans for nearly 50 homes near the town's busy railway station. Developers Backhouse Housing have submitted revised proposals for 49 homes on Burfitt Road, Castle Cary, following an initial suggestion of 60 homes.

The town has experienced significant housing growth over the past decade, with new estates approved between the town center and the railway station, located in the neighboring parish of Ansford. The Chippenham-based developer, who previously built 74 homes on a nearby site, has adapted the scheme to fit the site's character and landscape, ensuring consistency with recent developments.

The new development will be accessible from Burfitt Road, with pedestrian access provided onto Lockett Drive at the site's western edge and onto Ansford Hill, potentially including a pedestrian crossing over the main road. This would create a complete walking and cycling link to the railway station, which handles around 310,000 passenger journeys annually, via an existing footpath through the Station Green site.

However, there is currently no proposed pedestrian link between the Backhouse site and Redcliffe Homes' planned development of 29 houses on the B3152 Station Road, approved in September 2024. The developer's spokesperson emphasized the scheme's density, which has been tailored to align with the site's character and landscape, reflecting the recently approved adjacent scheme.

Somerset Council is expected to make a decision on the proposals by the end of the year. Residents and commuters alike will be keen to see the outcome of this development, which could significantly impact the area's housing landscape and transportation infrastructure.

Stay tuned for updates on this exciting development as it unfolds.
