The long-awaited Las Vegas Museum of Art (LVMA) is finally taking shape, and with it, a new cultural landmark is born. This project, decades in the making, is a testament to the power of vision and perseverance.
A Dream Realized
For Roger Thomas, a renowned interior designer, the LVMA represents a lifelong dream. His journey began at the age of eight, when a visit to an art museum sparked a passion for art and design. That early exposure, he believes, set the course for his remarkable career and his eventual collaboration with Steve Wynn on iconic properties like Bellagio and Wynn Las Vegas.
However, Thomas' vision extends beyond his personal success. He laments the lack of similar opportunities for Las Vegas children, a gap he aims to bridge with the LVMA.
The Grand Central Galleries: A Communal Gateway
The first step towards realizing this vision is the Grand Central Galleries, an innovative, multi-purpose space designed to engage and educate the community. Located in Symphony Park, the galleries will serve as a communal entry point, offering exhibitions, public programs, and a retail storefront.
One of the key features is the black box space, a versatile area for lectures, video programs, and sculptural installations. On the other side, traditional art forms like paintings, drawings, and archival materials will be showcased.
LVMA Executive Director Heather Harmon emphasizes the community's hunger for such programming, and the Grand Central Galleries aim to satisfy this appetite.
Naming Opportunities and Fundraising
The Grand Central Galleries also present naming opportunities, with the first being The Peggy Thomas Gallery, named after Roger's mother. Fundraising is well underway, with over half of the $200 million campaign goal secured.
A Visionary Architect's Perspective
Pritzker Prize-winning architect Francis Kéré, who designed the LVMA, sees the Grand Central Galleries as proof of the museum's special nature. He believes that starting with a functional space demonstrates the community's need for a place to educate and access art.
The Grand Vision Unveiled
Roger Thomas, excited to finally share the venue's plan, reveals two primary public spaces. The first is a climate-controlled gallery for all media, and the second is a specially designed space for experimental art and video production.
Alexia H. Chen, a principal at LGA Architecture, explains that the galleries will serve as a home base for the museum's administration and allow the LVMA to activate its presence immediately.
A Long and Winding Road
The journey to the LVMA began with a dinner party in 1975, hosted by banking magnate Jerry Mack and his wife, Joyce. Roger Thomas, fresh from earning his BFA, urged the Macks to host a fundraiser, which Steve and Elaine Wynn attended, making the largest pledge of the evening.
Over the years, there were promising moments and progress, with precursors like the Nevada Institute for Contemporary Art and the Las Vegas Art Museum at the Sahara West Library. However, a critical turning point came when Elaine Wynn brokered a partnership with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), providing access to their extensive collection for LVMA's curation.
Inclusivity and Design
Thomas worked closely with interior designer Alex Woogmaster to ensure the Grand Central Galleries were designed with inclusivity in mind. Woogmaster explains that the building's functions are shared between guests and the team, creating a welcoming atmosphere.
A Tabula Rasa Transformed
Currently, the Grand Central Galleries are a blank canvas, but Thomas has grand plans. The board room will double as the museum's library, housing Elaine Wynn's art book collection and Thomas' own extensive collection.
Thomas has also curated notable examples of mid-20th-century American design for the galleries' offices and public spaces, ensuring a high-quality aesthetic.
A Trial Run and a Bright Future
The Grand Central Galleries will serve as a testing ground for the LVMA, allowing the team to iron out logistics and understand what resonates with the Las Vegas audience. Thomas is particularly excited about the potential for educational outreach, hoping to inspire young minds as he was inspired at eight.
