Millions of Netflix Users 'Will Lose Access to Streaming Platform from Today' (2026)

Millions of Netflix Users Face Sudden Streaming Shutdown – Are You Affected?

Starting today, Monday, March 2, an estimated 87 million devices will lose access to Netflix, leaving many users scrambling for alternatives. But here's where it gets controversial: this change primarily impacts those who rely on Sony's PlayStation 3 (PS3) to stream their favorite shows. While Netflix hasn't officially announced this move, it follows a pattern of phasing out support for older devices, like the first-generation Amazon Fire TV.

Users have reported seeing a stark message on their PS3s: ‘Unfortunately, Netflix will no longer be available on this device after March 2, 2026. Visit netflix.com/compatibledevices for a list of supported devices.’ This leaves loyal PS3 owners, like Reddit user koteshima2nd, who praised their dedication, in a tough spot. ‘Goodbye PS3 Netflix,’ lamented AStupidguy2341, while KingOvDownvotes nostalgically recalled, ‘PS3 era was my favourite.’

And this is the part most people miss: It's not just about outdated technology. Many gamers still cherish their PS3s, and with around 87.5 million units sold worldwide, this change affects a massive audience. While most modern smart TVs, mobile phones, tablets, and streaming sticks are compatible with Netflix, older devices are increasingly at risk of becoming obsolete.

As software evolves rapidly, older systems struggle to support advanced applications like Netflix. In 2023, Gaming Bible reported that the PS3 still boasted around two million active monthly users, highlighting the platform's enduring appeal.

Is this a necessary step forward, or a blow to nostalgia? Some Reddit users praised Netflix for supporting the PS3 for two decades, while others, like nighttaco, expressed dismay: ‘Nooo, I still use this.’ LiteratureMindless71 saw it as a ‘time to modernise.’

This isn’t Netflix’s only recent change. In December, they removed the feature allowing most users to cast from their phones to a bigger screen, a move that disappointed many who relied on it for a better viewing experience.

What do you think? Is Netflix right to prioritize newer technology, or should they continue supporting older devices? Let us know in the comments below!
