Rapper Ghetts Jailed Over Fatal London Hit-and-Run (2026)

Bold opening: A celebrated rapper’s reckless choices led to a life shattered and a future stolen. Now, that consequence is a hard, public verdict. And this is the part most people miss: accountability doesn’t come only from fame.

Rapper Ghetts, real name Justin Clarke-Samuel, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for a fatal hit-and-run in north-east London. The 41-year-old was convicted after admitting to causing the death of 20-year-old Yubin Tamang by dangerous driving. Tamang, a university student from Nepal, died in hospital two days after the collision on Redbridge Lane East, Ilford, on the evening of 18 October 2025.

The court heard that Clarke-Samuel was driving at speeds exceeding 60mph in a 30mph zone when his BMW M5 struck Tamang as he crossed the road, and that he did not stop at the scene. Judge Mark Lucraft KC also imposed a 17-year driving ban. He described CCTV footage as showing a sequence of alarming driving errors that culminated in the fatal crash.

Prosecutor Philip McGhee stated that Clarke-Samuel had been drinking on the night of the crash, reportedly around one and a half times the legal alcohol limit. The defendant initially claimed he had three glasses of brandy with a meal.

Evidence presented in court showed that, while speeding back toward his home in Woodford Green, Clarke-Samuel ran a red light at six signals, veered onto the wrong side of the road, mounted the kerb, and collided with a motorcyclist and a Mercedes, causing further damage.

Tamang was struck as he crossed the road; the impact was described as catapulting him into the air and leaving him with catastrophic injuries.

Tamang’s family, in a statement read to the court, spoke of heartbreak and warned that Clarke-Samuel had stolen their son’s future and their own. They emphasised that forgiveness is unavailable for the unimaginable loss they have endured.

The court reviewed CCTV footage of Clarke-Samuel’s erratic driving, including the moment of impact. Clarke-Samuel had claimed he was driving dangerously because he believed he was being followed, but there was no evidence of a pursuit in the footage.

An Uber driver, initially thinking Tamang was a bundle of clothes in the road, alerted emergency services after realising the severity of the injuries. Police later found damage to Clarke-Samuel’s car, including the wing mirror, windscreen, bonnet, and front bumper, and located the vehicle near his home.

In December, Clarke-Samuel pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and to a separate charge of dangerous driving.

During mitigation, Ben Aina KC read excerpts from a letter Clarke-Samuel had written to Tamang’s family, in which the rapper expressed deep remorse and regret for Tamang’s death. Clarke-Samuel stated that his act was unintentional and offered a sincere apology for the suffering he caused.

The case also highlighted Clarke-Samuel’s lengthy criminal history, including 12 prior convictions for 27 offences dating back to his youth, such as robbery and other driving offences.

Shani Taggart of the Crown Prosecution Service asserted that Clarke-Samuel knew he was unfit to drive and recognized the excessive speed and dangers he posed to others. The sentence reflects the gravity of choosing to drive after drinking and the fatal consequences that followed.

Our thoughts remain with Yubin Tamang’s family as they grieve the loss of their son and navigate life without him. The case raises important questions about responsibility, public safety, and the impact of impaired driving, inviting readers to consider where accountability should lie when public figures cause harm through negligence.

Would you agree with the punishment given, or should the emphasis have been on rehabilitation and restitution in a case like this? Share your thoughts in the comments.
