Back in 2020, former Prime Minister Boris Johnson unveiled an ambitious plan to build 40 new NHS hospitals by 2030, allocating a staggering £3.7 billion for this initiative. This promise, however, has faced scrutiny and challenges along the way.
The Dorset Dilemma
Six of these proposed hospitals were earmarked for the south of England, with a significant focus on Dorset. But here's where it gets controversial: in 2024, the Labour government cast doubt on this promise, deeming it "undeliverable and unaffordable." So, what happened to these plans, and where do we stand today?
Progress in Dorset
Stephen Killen, the head of transformation at University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust, sheds some light on the matter. He reveals that work on new hospitals in Dorset was already underway before the national scheme was announced. With a boost in funding from the government, projects at St Ann's Hospital in Poole, Dorchester Hospital, Bournemouth Hospital, and Poole Hospital are either complete or nearing completion.
Killen, speaking from the new S-Deck at The Royal Bournemouth Hospital, described it as a "same-day emergency department" that will significantly improve efficiency and patient flow. He added that the trust has received over £260 million from the government's new hospital scheme, which has resulted in an improved healthcare system in the Dorset area.
"We've gained around 300 to 400 new beds across our sites, enhanced our theatres, and even got a brand new main entrance and kitchen facilities at the Royal Bournemouth site," Killen said. However, he emphasized that there's still a long way to go, with a £200 million backlog of work needed to bring the hospitals up to modern standards.
Controversial Changes
One aspect that has sparked debate is the reorganization of emergency departments in the county. From July/August 2026, emergency patients arriving by ambulance will be directed to the hospital in Bournemouth, while those with planned procedures and non-emergency services will go to Poole. This change has raised concerns and questions among the public.
Frimley Park's Future
Frimley Park Hospital in Surrey was added to the government's funding list in 2023. Serving a population of 900,000 across Berkshire, Hampshire, Surrey, and South Buckinghamshire, the hospital, built in the 1970s, faced concerns over the structural integrity of its Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) beams.
Caroline Hutton, Deputy Chief Executive of Frimley Health, stated that the funding would be used for a "state-of-the-art replacement" of the current hospital. The trust has identified a site for the new hospital, with construction expected to begin in 2030. However, the exact location remains undisclosed until commercial confidentiality restrictions are lifted.
Dr Al Pinkerton, MP for Surrey Heath, believes the NHS plans to build on Pine Ridge Golf Club, which he fears will be more difficult for patients to access compared to the current hospital.
Hampshire and Berkshire's Long Road Ahead
While Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust received £500,000 from the government and is expected to choose a site for a new hospital by March 2026, construction is not anticipated to begin until 2037 at the earliest. Hampshire Hospitals, too, faces a similar timeline, with funding allocated to buy land for a new facility in Basingstoke, but construction unlikely to start before 2037.
Both trusts have expressed disappointment over the delayed timelines, leaving the prospect of new hospitals in these areas much further down the road.
